7 Simply steps to self care

All too often we put our children and families needs ahead of our own. I know this is only natural when you become a Mum (or Dad) and is all part and parcel of parenting and taking care of the people we love, but sometimes (just sometimes) we have to take care of ourselves too. Some might say its selfish! But if we are to be the best parents and person we can be we must also take care of ourselves. Even if you don’t have children its still important to take a step back and practice a little self care. It does not need to be complicated or take up a lot of your time.

“I have to believe that caring for myself is not self indulgent. Caring for myself is an act of survival”

– Audre Lorde

So here I share ways you can take a little “me” time and practice a little self care.

  1. Get enough sleep

Getting enough rest is sometimes a struggle if you have small children, or have a lot on your mind but just having a couple of early nights could really improve your mood. A good night’s sleep will help with your concentration the following day and also make you more focused on what your doing.

  2. Recharge your batteries

Meet a friend for a coffee, take a hot bath and relax in front of the TV or take part in a hobby or exercise you always enjoy doing but haven’t done in a while. This is a great way to do a little something you enjoy, recharge those batteries and remind yourself of the person you are.

  3. Read a book

Take some time out, sit and read your favourite book or magazine.

  4. Treat yourself

Get your hair done, buy yourself a new lipstick or go on a little shopping spree and update your wardrobe, its nice to treat yourself once in a while. If your anything like me, since having kids I rarely treat myself to anything new as the kids always need something.

  5. Yoga and meditation

Take some time to relax, practice yoga or meditation. If that’s not your thing, simply sitting for 10 minutes and having some quiet time and focusing on your breathing can really help, also listening to music is a great way to unwind and relax.

  6. Document your day

Keeping a dairy/ journal or  simply writing a list are great ways to get your thoughts and feelings out of your head and down on paper. This will give you more focus on what’s most important in your day to day activities and help reduce stress. I suppose this is one of the reasons I love my blog, sometimes I have so many thoughts and ideas going around my head. Its a way in which I can get them down on paper, to express my views and feelings. I am not that great at it but its something I feel passionate about, its my little corner of the world that is just for me and is a way I can get creative. Self care is all about finding that one thing that makes you feel good about yourself.

  7. Get outside

We often spend a lot of time indoors, getting out in the fresh air, walk the dog are all ways to embrace the outdoors. I love to people watch, sitting out in the fresh air watching others go about their day.

We should never feel guilty for wanting a little time out, its important to take care of yourself so you can then take care of everyone else. I know its not always easy, but taking a step back from our work, family as well as other commitments we have is sometimes needed. It might be that you only have five minutes to spare, the smallest break can really make a difference and really help to boost your energy and reduce stress. Self care is all about finding that one thing that makes you feel good about yourself, yours maybe non of the above but you’ll know what it is, embrace it and enjoy it.

until next time

Good advice. I find that time with a friend having a coffee and a catch up is invaluable for my mood … that and buying the occasional treat!
