Christmas gifts – Homemade Limoncello

A few years ago we went to Sorrento in Italy to a friend’s wedding, It is such a beautiful place and if you’ve never been to Italy I would highly recommend it. When you go out for a meal in the town you are served shots of iced cold Limoncello . It is a great Italian digestifs tradition – and we soon got the taste for it. Once home we wanted to recreate the yummy liquor and  looked into ways we could make the liquor ourselves.

  • 300g sugar
  • 200 ml cold water
  • 1 litre of vodka

  • heat the sugar and water in a pan on a medium heat. stir until all the sugar has melted. then turn up the heat and bubble for 2 minutes.
  • squeeze the lemons and set  aside.
  • remove the syrup from the heat add the vodka and stir in the lemon juice.
  • pour the Limoncello into the bottles and leave to infuse for 1 day or up to 3 months. the flavour will develop the longer you leave it to infuse.

Limoncello  is also great to add to Prosecco to create a yummy limoncello fizz cocktail or a great after dinner drink served over crushed ice.

My husband learned some bartender skills on a previous job and now every once in a while we can all enjoy some delicious mocktails at home! No alcohol for us but this one would be a nice one to try too replacing vodka with maybe “apple juice”..;) Thanks for sharing! x
