If you’ve read my blog before you will have realised how much I adore the Scandinavian way of life, from the cosiness of Hygge to the simplicity of minimalist living. I love their whole take on life and something I think us Brits could learn alot from.
So with a brand new Ikea, Sheffileld just opened in our city, what better time to think about how we can bring a little Scandinavian styling and feel to our home.
Plants, plants and more plants
A Scandinavian home is not complete without bringing a little outdoors indoors. From succulents to cactus and large leafy greens in rattan bell baskets. Plants are a must in any Scandinavian inspired household.
Fifty Shades of grey
And no I don’t mean that ….I’m talking paint colours and home decor. The idea is to create a calm minimalistic clutter free home. Maybe it’s the dull dark days that inspire the Nords to adopt such a neutral colour palate. White, grey soft dusky pinks and black are the must have colours to creating an ideal base for any room.
Patterns and colour
A patterned or brightly coloured cushion is a must have accessory and brings colour to an otherwise plain room. Bursts of colour really bring that extra something to any room and the bigger brighter pattern the better.
Let there be light
In countries where winters are very long and it’s dark a lot of the time, letting in as much natural light as possible is so important. I know its not quite as bad as that in the UK but once the clocks go back, the darker nights do start to take there toll. Large open windows and light weight curtain help to let in as much natural light as possible but when natural light is at a minimum, use low level lamps or even better light the candles to create a soft inviting and cosy feel.
Light a Fire
Snuggling around an open fire is very Scandinavian but I think this is something I’m going to have to wait for – A wood burning stove is definitely on my wish list and is a great energy efficient way of keeping the house warm in the winter months. But for now I think that’s going to have to wait.
Do you like the sound of creating a Scandinavian feel in your home ?
I hope you feel as inspired as me.
Until next time
