5 Family alternatives to a beach holiday

With the winter months brings thoughts of holidays. What holiday plans do you have this year ???

When searching for holidays I would always look at beach holidays. You know the type, Family friendly Hotel somewhere hot and sunny where we can sit and relax by the pool while the kids play, swim, eat and enjoy themselves at the kids club. I’m sure you know the type of holiday I’m talking about. Its pretty standard for most families and why not ?? We hard work all year its nice just to relax and do nothing while the kids equally enjoy themselve’s.

But this year we are doing something different we are very lucky we able to be going on a cruise. My best friend has invited us to celebrate their wedding on a cruise ship. It’s probably not something we would have picked ourselves but on looking at the ship and what it has to offer not just for adults but children too we are going.  Two weeks sailing round the Mediterranean Sea doing something just slightly different and I can’t wait.

It’s made me realise we don’t have to do the same thing year after year it’s nice to do something different. So I’ve made a list of other types of holidays that are suitable to families but are out of the box a little of what we normally do or want from a holiday. Suprisingly quite few of the places I’ve picked don’t even have a beach.

I understand that everyone as different budgets and  some places might not suit everyone. With younger children it’s sometimes more difficult but maybe take a look, get a few ideas or just think outside of your comfort zone and plan something different one year. You might even enjoy it.

So here are 5 places I dream of visiting one year

Northern light

I would love to see the Northern lights and never thought it was something we would be able to do as a family but on looking there are lots of family friendly holidays available where you have a chance to see the Northern lights but also with other family friendly activities on offer including Reindeer sledging, Husky farms and maybe a trip to see Santa.

As I said we are going on a cruise this year. We are going on  a mediterranean cruise with Celebrity cruises on the Eclipse ship but there are lots of other family friendly cruises available including Disney Cruises and Royal caribebean with lots of family ships and activities. I am really looking good forward to it. An excuse to dress up and formal nights and visit a number of new places we have never been including Rome.

City breaks

Amsterdam, Berlin ,Copenhagen, Paris these places have lots of family friendly activities on offer and are great alternative to the usual beach holiday. You could just plan a long weekend for anyone of these places.

Skiing is something I would love to do. I’ve never skied and neither has my husband but on looking looks like a real family friendly holiday with lots of family ski resorts you can visit at various places including the French alps and Italy. You can book a variety of ski holidays through different companies including Neilson, inghams and Family ski and a lot of other companies I’m sure with a variety of family friendly packages on offer.

I’d love to hear what you are planning to do for your holidays this year, do you stick with beach holidays or do you like to do something a little different. Please tell.

Until next time
